Waste-free summer activity ideas
This summer let's move away from using Temu and Amazon - there are loads of things you can do that are waste-free or generate as little waste as possible.
Whether it is something you do with younger children or older, they can all enjoy it.
Ideas for kids
Here are some ideas to keep the kids entertained.
Making models from waste - junk modelling can create mermaids from egg boxes, a plastic bottle bird feeder and a paper plate owl. For an extra challenge try making your creation without sellotape or glue so all the elements can be easily recycled when you're done.
Create new wax crayons - all you need is a mould, or even paper cake cases and some old crayons (and an adult to help).
More ideas include:
- creating a bird feeder using an old tetrapak carton
- making a DIY bug hotel
- visiting a second hand shop and find some bargains
- challenging yourself to reduce waste with our checklist (PDF, 1.1MB)
Ideas for outdoor activities
Go outside for some inspiration:
- strawberry picking
- a nature walk
- do a litter pick in your community
- create a miniature garden
- have a low-waste picnic
- start composting; head over to our schools composting page for more ideas and games
- download our nature bingo template or create your own
Or if you're feeling more adventurous why not make a larger bug hotel, you can do this by using pine cones, bark and sticks as well as cutting cardboard tubes.
Ask your parent or carer to share your creations with us via our social pages.
