Tips for new students at university

There's lots to think about as you plan your first year at uni, so we're here to help with some of it.

Furnishing your halls

There's no need to spend loads on brand new furniture, furnishings, pots, pans and crockery. Before you leave for university, pop down to your nearest charity reuse shop at a recycling centre and pick up a bargain. There are reuse shops at Aston Clinton and High Wycombe.

Food shopping

Having the basics like oil, seasoning and a big bag of pasta always helps, but make sure you plan your meals out in advance. Read a guide for food shopping at uni.

Cooking

Learn a few staple meals before you go. There are loads of easy recipes on BBC Good Food.

If you have a freezer you could batch cook - portion-up bolognese or shepherds pie so you always have a easy meal ready to go. Batch cooking usually makes it cheaper per portion as well. Love Food Hate Waste has lots of tips and recipes.

Recycling

Don’t forget to continue separating your recyclables. Check what the local council collects. Don't forget to recycle your food waste as well.

Books

Buying all the text books you need can be expensive, try World of Books or similar first for a cheaper, preloved version.
